Pastoral Care

Lorem ipsum

Students thrive when they feel known, supported, and cared for within their school community.  In British schools this approach is known as pastoral care — the network of relationships, guidance, and support that helps every student develop both academically and personally.

Guided by our values of care, integrity, curiosity, and dedication, pastoral care is woven into daily life at St. Catherine’s to help students grow not only academically, but as thoughtful and confident individuals knowing that they have trusted adults and peers who support them as they grow in confidence and independence.

At St. Catherine’s, our commitment is simple: every student should feel confident that there are people in the school who know them well, care about their wellbeing, and are ready to support them whenever needed.

“When our son needed some extra support, the way the school responded showed the true partnership between school and family. The staff took the time to understand what was going on and guided him through it with care – helping him and us grow through a challenging situation.”

The Pastoral Network: Who Supports Your Child

Students at St. Catherine’s are supported by a network of staff who work closely together to guide and care for them throughout their school journey.

In the Lower School, children spend most of their day with their class teacher, who comes to know them very well — both as learners and as individuals. Supported by the Heads of Key Stage and the Deputy Head, class teachers work closely together to ensure that every child feels confident, supported, and ready to learn.

In the Upper School, as students begin moving between subject teachers, each student continues to be guided by a form tutor and Head of Year who know them well and support them as they grow in independence and prepare for their future pathways.

Form Tutors

Form tutors meet with students every morning and are the first point of contact for day-to-day guidance and support. They build relationships with their tutor group, track academic and co-curricular engagement, and maintain regular dialogue with families.

Heads of Year

Each year group is supported by a Head of Year, who works closely with tutors to ensure that students are supported consistently as they move through school.

Heads of Year coordinate the pastoral life of the year group, identify emerging needs, and ensure that students feel supported academically, socially, and emotionally.

Pastoral Leadership

Pastoral care is guided by senior pastoral leaders, including Heads of Key Stages, Head of Seniors, work closely with Heads of Year, tutors, and the wider leadership team to ensure that students receive consistent guidance and support throughout their time at the school.

They work closely with academic leaders, learning support, co-curricular staff, and the Futures team so that every student benefits from a well-rounded network of care.

Students Supporting Students

Pastoral life at St. Catherine’s also includes student leadership and peer support, strengthening connections across year groups and building a strong sense of community.

Older students play an important role in supporting younger members of the school through mentoring and leadership opportunities. These include:

  • Peer mentors, where older students guide and support younger students as they settle into school life in Upper School.
  • School Prefects and School Captains, who represent the student body and lead initiatives within the school
  • House leaders, who help build school spirit and encourage collaboration across year groups

Through these roles, students develop empathy, responsibility, and leadership while contributing positively to the life of the school community.

Students remain connected to the St. Catherine’s community beyond graduation through the work of our Alumni Relations team, which maintains relationships with graduates and supports new alumni through initiatives such as the Campus Connector programme, introducing them to former students already studying at university. The team also works closely with the Futures department, inviting alumni to share their experiences with current students during Universities Week, Careers Week, and other school events.

Working in Partnership with Families

Pastoral care is strongest when school and families work together.

Whether in Lower or Upper School, teachers, form tutors and pastoral leaders maintain open communication with parents and guardians so that students receive consistent support both at school and at home.

Together, we aim to create an environment where every student feels supported, confident, and ready to thrive.
